Valve Reveals Intent to Update Team Fortress 2 During 2023
It came as a shock to many when Valve showed signs of a major upgrade to Team Fortress 2 in 2023. Despite the game being over 15 years old, and the developer has dedicated a lot of its attention to other projects, Team Fortress 2 remains one of the most popular games on Steam and its players are still eagerly hoping for new material from Valve. It appears their wish may have been granted.
Since the launch of Team Fortress 2 in 2007, there have been a total of 759 updates released officially. However, since 2017, there have been no more than one or two updates per year, and most of those are for the Scream Fortress Halloween events. The Jungle Inferno and Meet Your Match Update of 2016 are considered to be the last major updates for the game. It’s been some time since a major update was released.

The developers of Team Fortress 2 have announced that this year will bring a “full-on update-sized update” for the game. This update will reward the game’s loyal players with a variety of new content, such as items, maps, taunts, unusual effects, and war points. They have even teased the possibility of more surprises.
It is not a formal announcement of the upcoming update, so there is no data about Valve’s intentions. Instead, Valve has asked Team Fortress 2 Steam Workshop creators to submit their works before May 1 to be considered for the update. This may hint that Valve itself is not intending to add new materials to the update, but even a range of Steam Workshop creations is more than what Team Fortress 2 has had in a while.
Valve has not given this update a name or a theme and has only referred to it as being “summer-situated”. Creators should not be concerned with adhering to a theme when creating content for the update and instead should focus on ensuring their work is of high quality. Valve will be assessing all submissions solely based on quality.
It is remarkable that after years without any major changes, Team Fortress 2 is still one of the most popular games on Steam. It is unknown how this game has endured without any updates for so long. With luck, the summer update will not be the final one for Team Fortress 2.
Team Fortress 2 can be downloaded and played on a PC.
