PS Plus Premium Adds Free Trial for Underrated Horror Game
PS Plus Premium subscribers have the opportunity to try out Carrion, a game from Devolver Digital that brings a unique twist to its genre of “reverse-horror”. Included in the list of free trials currently available on PS Plus Premium are a variety of titles such as God of War Ragnarok and Soul Hackers 2. Joining this roster is the Devolver Digital game that allows gamers to experience horror from the monster’s point of view.
In 2021, Carrion was released and it puts players in charge of a shapeless, red creature that starts off looking like a mound of goop. After breaking out of its container, however, the monster rapidly increases in size as it rampages through the research facility and swallows up the scientists and soldiers attempting to stop its expansion. As they venture through the facility, players can use the genetic material they absorb to enhance their monster, enhancing its speed and helping it break down barricades in order to make a getaway.
At E3 2019, Digital Devolver presented Carrion to the public for the first time, and the game quickly attracted attention for its take on the horror genre and its bright 2D pixel art developed by Phobia Game Studio in the two years leading up to its release. It was well-received upon its launch, and at the 2020 Game Awards, was nominated for Best Debut Game and Best Indie Game; however, it was unsuccessful in winning either, with Phasmaphobia and Hades taking the respective titles.
Carrion is now on PS Plus Premium, and a free trial was released in conjunction with its full release on PS5. This trial, like other titles on Premium, can be used for up to an hour so that gamers can decide whether or not they would like to purchase it.
It could be argued that Carrion is an ideal candidate for a free trial, since it is a smaller game, making it more accessible for those considering it to get a grasp on the mechanics and design. Although bigger titles such as Cyberpunk 2077 come with a longer free trial period of five hours, it might be difficult to get a full understanding of the game in such a short time.
Players can now get their hands on Carrion for Amazon Luna, Linux, macOS, Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox One.
