Julia Louis-Dreyfus Hints at Val’s Future in the MCU

Devoted MCU enthusiasts may recognize the name Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, however, many details remain unclear. Julia Louis-Dreyfus recently mentioned that her role may have a larger part in future MCU films.

Valentina was first introduced in 1968 as an Italian S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who moved up quickly in the ranks and worked with Nick Fury to take down Hydra, only to later be found out to be part of Hydra from the beginning. In the MCU, her character has been presented in a morally grey area, having been allied with John Walker and Yelena Belova, who have acted as antagonists in their respective shows. Louis-Dreyfus’ Valentina has been featured in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Black Widow, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and will be in the upcoming movie Thunderbolts. Yelena also mentioned Valentina in Hawkeye as the one who hired her to kill Clint Barton.

Willem Dafoe Is Willing To Rejoin The Marvel Universe, But There Is A Set Of Requirements He Needs To Be Met

While being interviewed by Rolling Stone, Louis-Dreyfus was asked if she was contracted for a lengthy amount of films in the MCU. She responded with an enthusiastic, “For a while, it seems!”, implying that she will be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s upcoming phases. This means that her role as Valentina in Thunderbolts won’t be her last.

Louis-Dreyfus shared how she got to play Valentina in the MCU. She stated how she had a pleasant conversation with Kevin Feige and Louis D’Esposito, which was motivated by her sons being huge Marvel fans. She then went on to explain how she had to learn about Valentina and the Marvel universe, which she is still doing. Louis-Dreyfus went on to say how she was excited to experience a new genre. When asked if it earned her any “cool points” with her sons, she said that they were totally in support of her.

Louis-Dreyfus has indicated that Valentina will have an essential part in the MCU’s future, though her exact purpose is still not known. Hints could be found in the character’s Marvel comic record. In the comics, Valentina was included in the Secret War storyline and the Secret Invasion crossover. During the Secret War storyline, a Skrull agent was disguising as Valentina to spy on Nick Fury, only to be slaughtered by him and revert to their Skrull shape.

In Marvel’s Secret Invasion, it is uncovered that Valentina is, in fact, alive and she is freed with other humans who were impersonated by the Skrulls. Secret Warriors unveils Valentina’s actual allegiance when she backstabs S.H.I.E.L.D. and becomes the new Madame Hydra. It is uncertain how faithful the MCU is to the comic books, yet the franchise has a tendency of deviating from the comics before. Thus, whether Louis-Dreyfus’ character will be following her comic book’s storyline or heading in a completely different direction is unknown, but it looks like her tale is only beginning.

Thunderbolts will be available in cinemas on July 26, 2024.
