Launch of Hogwarts Legacy Breaks 22-Year-Old Record and Outperforms Elden Ring
Hogwarts Legacy has reached a major sales milestone, surpassing the launch sales record of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’s video game adaptation and far exceeding the first week sales of Elden Ring. Both Hogwarts Legacy and Elden Ring are open-world action-RPGs that launched in February, but the Harry Potter game appears to have surpassed From Software’s award-winning game in one region.
GfK data reported on by GamesIndustry.biz shows that Hogwarts Legacy has broken a UK sales record for a Harry Potter video game. This record was set 22 years ago by Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (or Philosopher’s Stone ) and Hogwarts Legacy has surpassed it. Furthermore, its first week sales have also exceeded those of Elden Ring in the UK.
The physical sales for Hogwarts Legacy during its first week in the UK have exceeded those of Elden Ring by 80%, a remarkable achievement that is all the more impressive when taking into account the huge hype Elden Ring received last year, as well as the fact that Hogwarts Legacy is only available on three platforms in comparison to Elden Ring’s five. Currently, Hogwarts Legacy is only accessible on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X, while Elden Ring was released on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
It’s worth noting that Hogwarts Legacy has likely sold significantly more copies than the UK data indicates. As the data only covers physical sales, digital sales and other regions are unaccounted for. Once all these sales are taken into consideration, Hogwarts Legacy is likely to be one of the best-selling games of the year, or close to the top.
It appears that Hogwarts Legacy is likely to be a tremendous commercial success. It has been the top-selling title on Steam for a while now and has also set the record for the most-watched single-player game on Twitch. Unfortunately, until the data is shared with the shareholders, the exact sales figures remain unavailable.
The potential for Hogwarts Legacy to increase its sales figures is still there, now that the game is set to launch on PS4, Switch, and Xbox One. It’s possible that the Hogwarts Legacy Switch version could be a big hit, although the console’s outdated hardware might have a negative impact on its performance. Fans are still waiting to see what happens with that version, but the sales figures could still rise as more data is collected.
Hogwarts Legacy has arrived on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X, with the PS4 and Xbox One versions set to launch on April 4, and the Nintendo Switch version set to be released on July 25.
